Inca Trail permits 2026–2027

Only 500 people per day (including porters and guides) can start the trail, and permits are sold by licensed operators with each hiker's passport details. For May–September, book 4–6 months ahead. The trail closes every February for maintenance.

How far in advance should I book the Inca Trail?

For May–September book 4–6 months ahead; for other months 2–3 months. Permits cannot be changed or transferred once issued.

Is the Inca Trail open in February?

No. It closes every February for maintenance. You can hike Salkantay or another alternative trek instead.

How hard is the Classic Inca Trail?

Moderate to challenging: 42 km in 4 days with a high point of 4,215 m. Good fitness and acclimatization in Cusco are recommended.

Can I do the Inca Trail without a guide?

No. By law every hiker must go with a licensed operator and official guide.
