Cusco (3,399 m), the former capital of the Inca Empire, is the base for every trip to Machu Picchu. Its historic center mixes Inca walls with colonial churches, and nearby sites like Sacsayhuamán and Qorikancha can be explored on a half-day city tour.
Tip: spend at least two days here to acclimatize before any trek.
